Community Map

The Vermont map below reflects a snapshot of urban and community forestry activities across the state.  Each year our program staff is required to report to the USDA Forest Service at the community-level on activities that support establishment, conservation, protection, and maintenance of trees and forests in communities and urban areas.

Information on the tabs on the map:

  • Tree Ordinance or Policy: Local, community-wide laws and guidelines that identify who has the responsibility for oversight of urban and community forestry activities and that direct the use of best management practices for establishment, conservation, protection, and/or maintenance of urban and community trees and forests. More on ordinances and policies.
  • Planning Document: A detailed document or set of documents that identify and prioritize action items based on professionally based, relevant inventories and/or resource assessments, that outline the future management of the community’s trees and forests. More on community planning for urban forests.
  • Tree Inventory: Municipalities that have used VT UCF's municipal tree inventory tool or ash tree inventory tool to collect data on community trees within the last 10 years.  This also includes municipalities of which we are aware that collect and manage their own tree inventory data.
  • Tree City USA: Communities that have applied for and been successfully designated as a Tree City USA community by the Arbor Day Foundation.
  • Current Year Grant Recipient: Municipalities or communities that contain an organization or school that received a grant from VT UCF in the current year.  For the 2024 snapshot, these include five grant categories: Caring for Community Canopy, Growing Urban Forests in the Face of Emerald Ash Borer, and the Urban & Community Forestry grants, as well as the Fruit & Nut Tree grants administered through a partnership with the Vermont Garden Network and the Community Tree Planting Grants, administered through a partnership with the Chittenden County Regional Planning Commission.
