Beech Leaf Disease and Hemlock Pests in Vermont

Hemlock and beech are vital to Vermont’s forests, but introduced pests threaten both species. Hemlock acts as a foundational species, supporting many other plants and animals. Today, hemlock woolly adelgid and elongate hemlock scale are putting those functions at risk. Similarly, beech provides an important food source for wildlife, yet a new beech leaf disease continues to spread and impact this beautiful tree. In this webinar, Dr. Joshua Halman will share the status of these pests in Vermont and explain how the Department of Forests, Parks and Recreation is responding.

Speaker: Josh Halman is the Forest Health Program Manager for Vermont’s Department of Forests, Parks and Recreation. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Vermont in 2013 and began working for FPR in 2015 as a Forest Health Specialist, working on insect and disease monitoring and management. In his current role as Program Manager, Josh supervises the state’s Forest Health staff, collaborates with regional state leads, and helps develop plans to respond to forest pests in the state and region.
