Take the next step in Tinmouth’s journey to learn more about the past, present, and future of black ash trees near Tinmouth Channel and throughout the region. Black ash trees are threatened by emerald ash borer, a non-native beetle that feeds on and kills native species of ash trees.

This field walk will focus on the visual traits of black ash and the ecology of black ash swamps and forests. The group will also discuss the role of black ash in Abenaki culture and upcoming opportunities to learn how to pound black ash trees into splints for future use.

Expect snowy conditions and frozen ground. Please register in advance so we can contact you in case of change of date due to weather conditions. The walk will finish at 12pm with the option to bring your lunch to eat together at the end of the walk.

Guided by:

  • Dave Birdsall, Tinmouth Tree Warden and Consulting Forester
  • Tessa McGann, County Forester
  • Joanne Garton, Technical Assistance Coordinator for the Vermont Urban & Community Forestry Program
