Check out Forestry is a financial and technical assistance package offered by the Vermont Urban & Community Forestry Program (VT UCF). This project is designed to unite the practical benefits of trees with the vibrant role of public libraries in our communities. By enhancing library grounds with trees, this project aims to create more inviting, functional, and sustainable spaces for everyone to enjoy. Whether reducing cooling costs, minimizing glare on screens and pages, adding beauty to outdoor event areas, or providing quiet places for outdoor reading, trees play a pivotal role in improving the library experience.
In 2025 we worked with the Carpenter-Carse Library in Hinesburg and the Morristown Centennial Library to install 18 trees, create shaded spaces and edible landscapes, and create a greater sense of place on the library grounds.
For spring 2026, we are seeking 1 public library partner. Apply here by Friday, March 27th!
Scope
Check Out Forestry recognizes the unique opportunity for public libraries to model green infrastructure and demonstrate the benefits of urban forestry to their communities. VT UCF staff will work with selected public libraries to design a tree planting plan that directly addresses each library’s specific challenges. Possible project goals include:
- Shade Solutions: Provide relief from intense sun and reduce cooling costs for buildings.
- Outdoor Learning: Create inspiring, nature-based classrooms.
- Safer Spaces: Use trees for natural traffic calming.
- Stormwater Mitigation: Support infiltration of water during storm events.
Assistance Package
Annual funding and capacity for this initiative will vary, but in general, for each partnership with a Vermont public library, the financial and technical assistance package will include:
- At least 2 site visits from VT UCF staff to the public library to meet with the project lead(s), assess site conditions, and establish a planting plan.
- Purchase, delivery, and planting of trees suitable for library grounds.
- Purchase of essential supplies like irrigation tools and mulch to ensure successful establishment and growth.
- Tree care training by VT UCF staff for library and municipal staff and/or the public (optional).
Note: Funding does not cover benches, outdoor furniture, plaques, or other non-plant-related infrastructure. There will be no exchange of funds, and all coordination of plant purchase and planting will be done by VT UCF staff.
Partner Commitment
Selected library partners must commit to:
- Providing one lead project contact.
- Coordinating with VT UCF staff for at least 2 site visits.
- Coordinating site logistics for tree planting and care.
- Committing at least 2 volunteers to help on the tree planting day.
- Watering the planted trees throughout the 2025 and 2026 growing seasons.
Memorandum of Understanding
After selection, VT UCF will work with selected partners to develop an Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), which will be signed by both parties prior to the project commencing.
Eligibility
This program is open to public libraries located in Vermont.
