Check Out Forestry brings 16 new trees to the Castleton Free Library

UVM Students at Castleton Public Library

What to trees and libraries have in common? They both grow the public good!

In early June, UVM forestry students in the Forest Ecosystem Analysis class (affectionately known as Forestry Camp) teamed up with the VT UCF Program to plant 16 new trees at the Castleton Free Library through our Check Out Forestry program.

Before shovels hit the dirt, VT UCF Urban Forester Adz McCullough walked students through what to look for on a site and gave a thorough planting demonstration. Then teams got to work, planting a mix of species around the library grounds.  These trees will benefit the public for years to come, providing shade, aesthetic improvements, and educational opportunities.

Check Out Forestry connects Vermont public libraries with financial and technical assistance to plant trees. Stay tuned this fall for our call for partners for the 2027 round of the program.
