Pruning demonstration

Join the VT Urban and Community Forestry Program for a free workshop on tree pruning and chainsaw maintenance, held at the Swanton Village Municipal Complex. Urban Forester Adam McCullough will lead the workshop. This workshop is being offered through a partnership with the Village of Swanton Public Works Department.

This training opportunity will give you the knowledge to maximize tree health and longevity while minimizing risk and hassle using equipment you already own.

Wednesday, November 12th
Swanton Village Municipal Complex, 120 First St, Swanton, VT
10:00am - 12:00pm

Workshop Overview: This training opportunity will give you the knowledge to maximize tree health and longevity while minimizing risk and hassle. Pruning can minimize conflicts like sight line issues to road signs or around corners, encroachment on right of ways causing wear and tear on vehicles or interfering with snow plowing, or grass mowing.

The second half of the training will focus on chainsaw maintenance. Bring your own saw or the work saws from your municipality to give them some maintenance, sharpening, and a safety check. We will test the saws for cutting speed at the beginning and end of the workshop to better understand the improvements maintenance can make. Good tools are more enjoyable and effective to use. If you take care of them, they’ll take care of you.

The same can be said for trees! As part of our green infrastructure, trees serve many of the same purposes as the rest of the municipal infrastructure we maintain. They handle stormwater, calm traffic, and make our towns more prosperous and more resilient to weather extremes. Every part of our infrastructure requires skilled maintenance. Why not make it easy, enjoyable, and effective with sharp tools and proper techniques?

Intended Audience: Municipal Road Crew, Highway Department, and Public Works staff. This hands on training is intended for municipal staff who are responsible for tree, lawn, or landscape care of any kind.

This workshop has been approved for 2 hours through the Vermont Local Roads Roads Scholar Program.

Registration: This event is free, but pre-registration is recommended to communicate any weather-related changes and to receive follow-up materials.  Register
