During this guided tour, you'll learn about the different species cultivated, sustainable growing practices, and the skills needed to maintain the nursery. You'll have the chance to participate in a hands-on activity and we'll wrap up with an informal Q&A session where you can ask any lingering questions and discuss how you can get involved in supporting our urban forestry efforts.

Family-Friendly Activities

  • All ages welcome, as long as they are supervised by parent/guardian.
  • A tree craft/activity will be available for younger participants ages 6-12.

Bonus

  • This is a free workshop but registration is required.
  • We will provide pizza for participants at the end of the workshop.

About the Nursery

The Burlington Community Tree Nursery was established by Branch Out Burlington! (BOB!) in 1998 to provide a sustained source of low-cost trees to plant along Burlington’s streets and in the parks. It is a public/private partnership with the Burlington Department of Parks, Recreation and Waterfront. Every spring, over 120 bare-root saplings (5-8 ft tall) purchased from a commercial nursery and planted. The trees are planted into special cloth “grow bags” that support healthy root growth and discourage stem-girdling roots. This growing system concentrates the root system within the bag and facilitates transplanting.

Whether you're a tree enthusiast, a gardening hobbyist, or simply curious about how you can contribute to the greening of Burlington, this tour offers something for everyone.

To request a disability-related accommodation to participate in this program, please contact Gwen Kozlowski at 802-656-7638 or gwen.kozlowski@uvm.edu by September 6th so we may assist you.
