2017 Tree Steward Award: Arbor Day Award

This year, the VT UCF staff decided that we’d like to create an award category that would allow us to recognize a group or individual that has specifically and repeatedly impressed us with their tree stewardship efforts.

The Middlebury Tree Committee was established in 2015 by a group of passionate citizens who had attended our Stewardship of the Urban Landscape course that spring.  The Tree Committee recruited members that now include SOUL participants, Forest Pest First Detector course graduates, the town’s Tree Warden, the Addison County Forester, and the town Parks Director. In the two short years since the establishment of this group, they’ve worked with VT UCF to conduct a public tree inventory, they’ve drafted a Middlebury Community Forest Management Action Plan, they have held tree plantings and tree care workshops, they have applied for and received grants from our program, they’ve worked hard to forge relationships with town staff and to gain respect as a new town committee, and the Town of Middlebury has adopted the Emerald Ash Borer Preparedness Plan that was written by members of the Tree Committee.
