2013 Tree Steward Award Winner: Community Category

Over the course of the past two years, the Village of Essex Junction has taken tremendous strides to improve the condition and quantity of the trees in the municipality.  In this time period, Essex Junction has progressed from having little to no formal tree activities to completing a tree inventory, passing a tree policy, establishing an informal tree committee, and planting 22 trees in the Village center.  A large testament to the success of Essex Junction's urban canopy program is the cooperation that has occurred between interested residents of all walks of life and Village staff.  Staff members from three different departments have put time into assisting with this project, and approximately eight volunteers have put in over a hundred hours of work.  In addition, the Village has been successful in obtaining two grants in order to further our work on these initiatives.  Several Village volunteers have also been working to engage the community at large in the importance of an urban canopy.  Volunteers held an Arbor Day event at Summit Street School, set up a table at a Village volunteer fair, and organized a pruning workshop.  These efforts have brought increased enthusiasm towards the idea of increasing the Village canopy.
