“My friend Treebert”

Let me tell you about my friend, Treebert! He is a Norway maple. Norway maples are an invasive species from Europe. They are not good for sap or building, but I think Treebert is the best tree in the world. Let me tell you why.

When I first climbed (and named) Treebert, I was 9. I was scared of heights, but I really wanted to climb a tree! So one rainy day, I climbed high enough to see the beautiful pond behind my house, and I didn’t feel scared anymore. In fact, I go up there every day now, and I have built 2 pulley systems, a bench, and curtains in the branches, with the help of my sisters, my cousin and my friends. During this time, I learned the skills of cooperation, planning, perseverance, and patience.

Some people may think that Norway maples are weeds, but Treebert is my friend and has really helped me grow as a person. I like to help him grow as a tree. It’s the same way with people: even if someone is considered unimportant, he or she can still be someone’s best friend.
