Choosing a Device for Tree Inventory

If you intend to use VT UCF's inventory tool, which is coordinated through the Vermont Agency of Natural Resources GIS database, this guidance should help you determine which devices will be compatible.

As of February 2020, Android devices are compatible with our offline data collection functions.

There are certain factors that go into consideration when purchasing a device for field data collection. The biggest is selecting a device that meets the minimum supported requirements of the intended application. We've simplified this a bit and have included the minimum system requirements for Collector and Survey123.

Requirements for running ArcGIS Collector

ArcGIS Collector is supported on Android, iOS, and Windows devices.

Android 4.2 (Jelly Bean) or later
Processor: ARMv7 or later, or x86
OpenGL ES 2.0 support
Precise location (GPS and network-based) support

iOS 9.3.5 or later
iPhone, iPad, iPod touch
Windows 10 (tablet and PC)
Version 1511 or later
Long-Term Servicing Branch (LTSB) version 1607 or later

iOS Device Options

The ADS - ANR GIS Team Recommends Apple iPads for mobile data collection using ArcGIS Collector or Survey123. From our experience, it is the most stable when running Collector and Survey123. It also seems to run more smoothly with a better user experience (UX). It doesn't matter what form factor (mini, air, pro, etc.), but we recommend at least 32GB of storage and the iPad NEEDS to have cellular enabled to use on-board GPS functionality. Most current generations of iOS devices will run the applications smoothly. The only thing to consider is cost.

Android Device Options

It should be noted that software application releases from ESRI lag when using the Android OS. Most updates and applications are rolled out to iOS first. Many consider Androids as being cheaper alternatives to iOS devices, however to meet minimum specifications of GPS applications, we've found that the costs are comparable. Below, you'll find a few options that would be adequate for collecting mobile data.
