This fall, VT UCF launched a 3-year initiative to increase community capacity for recreation planning in town forests.
Over the next three years, we will be working with 10 communities to develop town forest recreation and stewardship plans using a facilitated community engagement process. Afterward, we will identify lessons learned and create resources to transfer to all communities across Vermont. We anticipate an application process to identify the 10 communities.
This project will address three identified needs:
- Grow communities' capacity to plan for Vermont's growing forest-based outdoor recreation industry
- Promote town forest stewardship plans (as of right now less than half of Vermont's 368 town forests have a plan in place)
- Strengthen resources to support sustainable town forest stewardship
